Dating safety, scams and verification

About Meet Safe Journal

Meet Safe Journal is a guide to staying safe while dating online. It explains how romance scams and catfishing work, how to check that someone is who they say they are, how to protect personal information and what to do if something has already gone wrong.

Readers

Adults who date online, with particular attention to groups that fraudsters often target, including people over 50, and the family members and friends who worry about them. The site is for readers aged 18 and over.

Tone

Calm and practical. Scams succeed partly through shame and panic, so the journal avoids both. Guidance is based on material from the Federal Trade Commission, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, Report Fraud in the UK and the safety pages of the dating apps themselves.

Help pages stay clean

Pages about reporting scams, sextortion and getting support carry no paid links of any kind.

Funding

The journal is funded by advertising and labelled sponsored placements from relevant safety services. Sponsors have no say over safety advice. See the editorial policy.
